While I like First Person Shooter (FPS) games, I am not the best at them. With the exception of Planetside 2, I don't even try playing online versus other players. I usually stick to story modes, co-op ones with my brother or play against bots. I came across Vengeance about a year ago and I was impressed with the game from the start. While the game is small as far as content goes, it does a good job of bringing back the deathmatch feel FPS games had back in the 2000s.
Vengeance is a FPS game that has no story mode and is strictly multiplayer matches (or bot matches, which is what I played). The game is setup and plays very similarly to Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare's multiplayer. The game has five maps and four different game modes. The game has kill streaks that are very familiar to Call of Duty players. The game has a progression system that lets your player level up over all your matches and the higher your level the more weapons you unlock. There is a pretty decent list of weapons you can choose from once you are at max level. One key thing about this game is that you can level up your player by playing bot matches which is good for solo players like myself.
The first mode you can play is a standard Deathmatch with two to eight players with the winner being whoever has the most kills within the time limit. Team Deathmatch is basically the same except you play on teams of two or four players. Domination is two to eight player score mode where there are three spots on the map you can capture and holding these control points adds to the score for your team. Gun game is a two to eight player mode where you start with one gun and every kill you get changes you to a different gun. You win Domination with the highest score at the end of the match while you win the gun mode by being the farther along than everyone else by the end of the match or going through the whole weapon list.
The five maps don't look bad but are pretty small for the most part which isn't bad either. Small maps lead to constant action, especially if you are doing an eight player deathmatch. The weapons all handled fine and also looked good. The player models were probably the weakest part of the game graphically for my and even they were not bad. The sounds effects were not bad and weapons did sound different from each other. The game has one or two small audio tracks but most of the time there was no music playing.
I only had two problems with this game. My first problem was the bots have only one difficulty, hard. These bots rarely miss, and if they see you first you are probably going to die. I feel a difficulty option for them would have been nice. Secondly, when setting up any of the matches you can only select how long the match is going to go on for and not end the match when you hit a score threshold. That is more of a minor issue for me but something I would have liked to see. More maps would have been nice as well.
Vengeance has a goal of being an old school shooter and it delivers on that goal. This is a game I can start up, do some quick bot matches and put back down. It does remind me of COD 4 and that is OK since I played COD 4 with bots and that is what I do with this game as well. The developer updated the game at the end of last year and did some game play and graphic overhauls so it was nice to see the developer was still working on the game almost six years after its release. If you are looking for a FPS game to play mostly against bots this is a good choice to consider.
