I had no idea what Mutant Chronicles was about when I ran across it on TV a few years ago. I remember hearing about this movie when it came out in 2008 but that was it. I watched it and thought the movie was alright. Recently I was looking for something to watch and again I came across this movie. After watching it for a second time (and this time focusing on the movie vs before when I was half paying attention), I was left feeling a little underwhelmed.
Mutant Chronicles is mostly based on the RPG series of the same name. The quick movie version is that in the future the world is run by four mega corporations that are fighting each other for the last few resources on Earth. During this fighting an ancient evil device gets unlocked and the creatures it sends out start killing everything in there path. The Earth seems doomed when a religious order comes forward saying they know how to stop the evil device. A group of soldiers are sent on a suicide mission to destroy this evil device in order to save the millions of people on Earth not lucky enough to get off world.
I had no problem with the plot of the movie initially. The small plot holes didn't bother me but there was some glaring ones that got to me. One involved a character who presumably dies near the beginning of the movie only to be seen weeks later in the movie being dragged to the source of the evil. This wouldn't be a problem except I got the impression from the movie that the heart of the evil device was right where this character was last seen so I don't get how this character would still be alive at this point. By the end of the movie I was pretty much disinterested in it and finished for the sole fact that I was near the end anyway.
I thought the acting was alright in the movie. Thomas Jane and Ron Perlman did good in my opinion while the other characters didn't do horrible by no means. The CG in this movie was not good though and that was something that did bother me. There are parts in the movie that are clearly CG and it made it painful to watch. Not all of it was bad but I would say the majority of it was. If this was an indie film I wouldn't dwell on the issue but this was a decent budgeted movie with some bigger name stars, I expected better.
With all my gripes with the movie, I can't say I would never watch this again. The action wasn't horrible and the acting didn't turn me away. Bad CG and a plot line that could have been much more fleshed out is what hurt this movie for me. Am I going to seek this movie out to watch it again on DVD or digital? Probably not but if it was on TV again I would probably keep it on in the background.
